SMU Mourns Vice-Chancellor

Minister of Higher Education and Training Buti Manamela has paid tribute to Professor Tandi Matsha-Erasmus, describing her death as a significant loss to both Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University and the wider higher education sector.

Professor Matsha-Erasmus served as Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the university.

Manamela said she was a distinguished scholar, an accomplished academic leader and a dedicated servant of higher education.

“Throughout her career, she demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence, transformation, social justice, and the advancement of health sciences education. Her leadership was marked by integrity, compassion, courage, and a profound belief in the transformative power of education,” he said.

He said she worked tirelessly to strengthen the university’s academic mission, advance research and innovation, and deepen its contribution to society.

“Under her stewardship, SMU continued to build its reputation as a leading health sciences university committed to addressing the needs of communities and contributing to the development of a capable and inclusive South Africa,” Manamela added.

The minister extended his condolences to her family, colleagues and all those who worked alongside her.

In a statement, the university described Matsha-Erasmus as a distinguished academic, accomplished leader and passionate advocate for higher education. It said she championed a vision of a university that not only produced graduates and knowledge but also contributed to nation-building and social transformation.

The institution said her tenure was characterised by courage, integrity, compassion and accountability, adding that she led during a period of significant institutional reflection and renewal.

Acting Director of Advancement and Communications, Tshimangadzo Mphaphuli, said: “As the SMU community mourns this profound loss, it also celebrates a life of exceptional achievement, dedicated service, and enduring impact. Professor Matsha-Erasmus leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire students, academics, researchers, professional staff, alumni, and partners for generations to come.”

The university said details of the memorial and funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.
