A major drug bust in North West has landed eleven suspects behind bars after police uncovered what is believed to be one of the country’s biggest clandestine drug laboratories.

The suspects appeared in the Swartruggens Magistrate’s Court today following their arrest during a coordinated operation led by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, also known as the Hawks.

They face charges linked to drug manufacturing, illegal possession of precious metals, possession of hazardous materials, and contraventions of immigration laws.

The matter was postponed to 22 May for interpreters, immigration verification, and possible formal bail applications. All eleven accused remain in custody.

Investigators say the arrests followed an intelligence-driven operation involving Crime Intelligence, organised crime units, and the Hawks’ narcotics teams.

During the raid, law enforcement officers uncovered a large-scale facility believed to have been used to manufacture methamphetamine.

Police seized approximately 481 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine, chemical substances, specialised equipment, and three firearms. The estimated value of the laboratory is believed to exceed R1 billion.

Among those arrested are foreign nationals from Mexico, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, as well as South African citizens.

Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said the investigation is far from over.

“This is a significant breakthrough in the fight against organised crime, and investigations are continuing as forensic experts process the scene,” said Mogale.

Preliminary findings suggest the lab may be the fourth drug manufacturing site in South Africa linked to suspected Mexican syndicates.

Police say the property owners have not yet been located and are still wanted for questioning.
