US President Donald Trump has announced a proposed three-day ceasefire in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, set to run from May 9 to May 11.
Trump said the temporary truce would pause fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces during the period, which coincides with Russia’s annual Victory Day commemorations. He described the move as a short-term humanitarian step and a possible opening for further negotiations.
The announcement also outlined an accompanying prisoner exchange proposal, with both sides expected to release around 1,000 detainees each if the agreement is implemented.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated support for the ceasefire initiative, according to reports, though the details of implementation and monitoring remain unclear. There has been no immediate public confirmation from the Russian government or President Vladimir Putin regarding formal acceptance of the arrangement.
The proposed pause in hostilities comes amid continued fighting along multiple frontlines, with both sides sustaining military operations in eastern and southern Ukraine. Analysts note that short ceasefires during the conflict have previously been fragile and difficult to enforce without strong verification mechanisms.
It remains uncertain whether the proposed ceasefire will hold or develop into broader negotiations. Still, international observers have described any temporary halt in fighting as a potential, if limited, opportunity to reduce civilian casualties and allow humanitarian access.
Further updates are expected as both governments clarify their positions on the proposed agreement.
