Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has dismissed Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and dissolved the government in a major political shake-up that has triggered public reaction and uncertainty across the country.

The announcement was made on national television and marks a breakdown in relations between the two leaders, who were once close allies and central figures in Senegal’s recent political transition.

The presidency said the cabinet has also been dissolved, with ministers remaining in caretaker roles to manage day-to-day government operations until a new administration is formed.

Officials said the move is aimed at strengthening coordination within the executive and maintaining stability during the transition period, without giving a timeline for appointing a new prime minister.

Tensions between Faye and Sonko had reportedly been building for months over economic policy direction and relations with international financial institutions, gradually leading to a breakdown in their working relationship.

Sonko remains a significant political figure and continues to command strong support. His dismissal prompted reports of protests in parts of Dakar.

Political analysts say the split represents a critical moment for Senegal’s leadership structure, given their shared electoral history and reform agenda.

Government officials have sought to reassure citizens that state institutions remain functional and essential services will continue without disruption.
