Veteran South African actor Sello Maake kaNcube has formally rejected an honorary doctorate awarded to him by Trinity International University of Ambassadors.

The Foundation said the move follows years of public controversy surrounding the institution. It added that reputational harm and emotional distress also influenced the decision.

According to the Foundation, Maake kaNcube accepted the honorary doctorate in good faith. He had no involvement in the institution’s administration, governance or accreditation processes.

Despite this, his name became central to public debate around the institution. The Foundation said this resulted in public ridicule and damage to his reputation.

“Maake kaNcube has spent decades building a respected legacy in arts and culture,” the Foundation said.

It stressed that he has never been implicated in any wrongdoing related to the institution.

The Foundation confirmed that formal letters have been sent to Trinity International University of Ambassadors and the Department of Higher Education and Training. The letters call for public clarification on the matter.

It further stated that Maake kaNcube is appointing legal representatives to advise him on the issue. They will also consider any legal remedies that may be available.

“All correspondence issued thus far has therefore been made strictly without prejudice and with full reservation of legal rights,” the Foundation said.

Despite the controversy, Maake kaNcube remains committed to his work in theatre and television. He also continues to mentor emerging talent.

The Foundation thanked supporters for their continued support.
