The government of Somalia has expressed concern over the decision by United States authorities to refuse entry to international football referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan.
In a statement, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said Omar Abdulkadir Artan remains one of the country’s most prominent sporting figures and a role model for young Somalis. He was named Referee of the Year in Africa in 2025 by the Confederation of African Football.
The ministry said the Somali government had engaged with relevant authorities in an effort to facilitate his travel, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
The decision ended what would have been a historic milestone for Somali football. Omar Abdulkadir Artan had been selected as an official for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which would have made him the first referee from Somalia to participate in the tournament.
His appointment had drawn widespread praise across Africa and internationally, following his recognition as the continent’s top referee in 2025.
Omar Abdulkadir Artan travelled to the United States to attend a compulsory FIFA training camp ahead of the World Cup. However, he was stopped during the entry process and denied permission to enter the country.
Reports indicate that US officials cited vetting concerns during screening. He was questioned before being removed and returned to Somalia via transit routes, including a stop in Turkey.
Neither US authorities nor FIFA have publicly provided detailed reasons for the decision.
Following the incident, FIFA removed him from the list of referees appointed to the tournament. His exclusion is understood to be linked to his inability to enter the host country and complete the required preparations.
The development has sparked discussion within football circles, where his selection had been seen as a breakthrough for Somali officiating on the global stage.
The Somali government said it continues to hold Omar Abdulkadir Artan in high regard and praised his contribution to sport. It said his achievements demonstrate how dedication and perseverance can lead to success at the highest level.
The ministry confirmed that Omar Abdulkadir Artan has returned safely to Mogadishu and will continue his duties nationally and internationally.
It also thanked governments, organisations and individuals who expressed support following the incident.
Somalia government said it will continue engaging relevant partners to seek further clarity while safeguarding the rights of its citizens abroad.
The statement concluded by welcoming Omar Abdulkadir Artan home and reaffirming national support for one of its most recognised sporting figures.
