Bafana Bafana defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a muscle tear while playing for MLS side Chicago Fire.
The setback was confirmed by coach Gregg Berhalter before Chicago Fire’s 2-0 victory over Necaxa on Thursday.
“Mbo being out for the year is a tough one,” Berhalter told Apple TV.
Mbokazi recently helped Bafana Bafana reach the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup. Their impressive campaign ended with a 1-0 defeat to Canada in the last 32.
His performances during the tournament attracted interest from several top European clubs. They were reportedly keen to sign the young defender following his impressive start to life at Chicago Fire.
The former Orlando Pirates defender had made 12 appearances for the MLS club. He quickly established himself as a fan favourite with a string of composed displays.
The injury has now brought his campaign to an early end. He will spend the coming months recovering before returning to action.
