Mamelodi Sundowns will retire Jayden Adams’ number eight jersey for the 2026/27 season as the club pays tribute to the late midfielder.

The club announced the decision today, saying the gesture honours a player whose contribution to Sundowns and its supporters will not be forgotten.

Adams, 25, died on 11 July 2026 after featuring for Bafana Bafana at the FIFA World Cup.

He featured in all three of South Africa’s group matches as Bafana reached the knockout stage for the first time. Adams started against Mexico and Czechia before coming on as a substitute against South Korea.

His death sparked an outpouring of tributes from the football community.

A memorial service was held in Stellenbosch on 16 July, allowing supporters, football figures and members of the community to honour his life and career.

Adams was later laid to rest in Stellenbosch on 25 July. Family, friends, football officials and teammates from Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana attended the funeral service.

Adams began his professional career at Stellenbosch FC before joining Sundowns in 2025. He was part of the squad that won the 2025/26 CAF Champions League.

His final international campaign came at the World Cup, where he was part of a Bafana side that progressed beyond the group stage.

Police opened an inquest following his death. The circumstances surrounding what happened remain under investigation, and no official cause of death has been released.

The decision to retire his No. 8 shirt means it will not be worn by another Sundowns player during the 2026/27 season.

The tribute ensures Adams’ number remains associated with the player who made his mark at the club before his career was cut short.
