The Madlanga Commission will have more time to complete its investigation into alleged corruption, criminality and political interference in the criminal justice system.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended the deadline for the commission’s final report to 25 January 2027.

The extra time will allow the inquiry to process additional evidence, including testimony from experts who have made recommendations linked to its terms of reference.

The commission’s previous deadline was 16 November 2026. The Presidency says the January deadline is final.

The Activists and Citizens Forum has welcomed the extension.

Its spokesperson, Dennis Bloem, said the commission still had important work to complete.

The forum also praised chairperson Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, the commissioners, evidence leaders and investigators for their work.

The commission was established after KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made serious allegations about criminality and political interference in law enforcement structures in July 2025.

Ramaphosa announced the inquiry on 13 July and formally appointed it on 21 July 2025.

Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga was appointed chairperson, with advocates Sesi Baloyi SC and Sandile Khumalo SC as commissioners.

The public hearings were initially scheduled to start on 1 September 2025. They were delayed by procurement problems.

The first hearing eventually took place on 17 September 2025. Mkhwanazi was the first witness.
