A luxury sports car linked to the Tembisa Hospital corruption investigation is now on the auction block.

The Ferrari SF90 Stradale was among several vehicles preserved by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) in September 2025 as part of its investigation into alleged corruption and maladministration at the Gauteng hospital.

Online bidding opened today. The car has an authorised minimum sale price of R9.5 million, although bidding starts at R8 million.

The auction is proceeding after the Pretoria High Court dismissed an urgent application by businessman Hangwani Morgan Maumela and trustees of the MHR Maumela Family Trust to stop the sale.

The Special Tribunal authorised an SIU-appointed curator to sell the vehicle in August. The proceeds must be held in an interest-bearing trust account until the civil proceedings are finalised.

The Ferrari is linked to a much wider investigation into the alleged looting of money intended for public healthcare.

In an interim report released in September 2025, the SIU said it had identified three major syndicates linked to more than R2 billion in suspected losses at Tembisa Hospital.

One of the syndicates was linked to Maumela. The unit was reviewing 1,728 procurement bundles worth R816.56 million. It had completed its analysis of 924 bundles and reported significant irregularities.

The SIU also traced 41 suppliers or service providers linked to Maumela. However, its report does not specify what each business was contracted to supply or where the companies were based.

The wider investigation covered 207 service providers and 4,501 purchase orders at the hospital. The SIU reported irregularities in procurement, including allegedly fraudulent documents and fronting to bypass proper tender procedures.

The unit also reported that goods were not delivered in transactions it examined. It alleged that money was channelled through front companies or conduit accounts to beneficiaries.

Assets worth about R520 million were identified as linked to the Maumela syndicate. These included luxury vehicles and properties.

The investigation followed concerns raised by the late Gauteng health department official Babita Deokaran, who had flagged suspicious payments involving Tembisa Hospital before she was murdered in August 2021.

The sale is intended to preserve the Ferrari’s value while legal proceedings continue. It does not amount to a finding of guilt against Maumela.
