Sasol Banyana Banyana have settled in Osaka, Japan, after a journey of just over 20 hours from South Africa, as they prepare for two international friendly matches against the host nation.
The first match is scheduled for Saturday, at Yanmar Hanasaka Stadium, kicking off at 15h50 local time (08h50 South African time).
The second encounter will take place next week, Tuesday, at J-Green Sakai, also in Osaka, with a kick-off at 15h30 local time (08h30 South African time).
The fixtures form part of Banyana Banyana’s build-up to the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, set to take place in Morocco from 26 July to 16 August. The continental tournament also serves as a qualifier for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The team recently concluded a double friendly series against Algeria in Durban, where they secured wins in both matches under head coach Desiree Ellis.
All 23 players selected for the Japan tour are available for selection, with Scotland-based midfielder Linda Motlhalo and Denmark-based defender Bongeka Gamede joining the squad during transit in Dubai before the team continues to Osaka.
Training begins today with the first session scheduled as the squad adjusts to local conditions.
Japan, ranked fifth in the world, provides a significant test for the African champions, who are currently ranked 58th. The hosts, also known as Nadeshiko Japan, made history in 2011 as the first Asian nation to win the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The tour is seen as a key part of South Africa’s preparations as they continue building towards continental and global competitions.
