A deadly assault has once again highlighted the fragility of security in the Lake Chad region.

At least 23 Chadian soldiers have been killed and 26 others wounded after Boko Haram militants attacked a military base in the Lake Chad region, the army said.

The attack took place at an island outpost and sparked a heavy exchange of fire before troops managed to repel the attackers. Military officials said several militants were also killed during the confrontation.

Boko Haram, which has waged a long-running insurgency across the Lake Chad basin spanning Chad, Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon, continues to target remote military positions despite repeated regional counterterrorism efforts.

The Chadian army described the incident as a “violent incursion” but said the situation has since been brought under control.

The attack adds to growing concern over renewed militant activity in the region, where security forces remain stretched across vast and difficult terrain.
