The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) led a demonstration today to the headquarters of Cartrack in Rosebank, Johannesburg. The group sought answers to the circumstances surrounding the death of employee Gcina Dladla.

Dladla reportedly fell ill while at work. Her death has triggered public outrage and calls for accountability.

The company said the incident was sudden. It added that trained first responders assisted her before emergency medical services arrived. Dladla later died.

Reading out a memorandum, ANCYL Greater Johannesburg Regional Deputy Secretary Zonke Vilakazi said the protest demands accountability, justice for the family and firm steps to prevent similar incidents.

She said the company must provide a full account of events leading to Dladla’s death. This includes decisions taken by management before and after the incident.

Vilakazi also called for an internal investigation and the precautionary suspension of any official whose conduct may have contributed to the events, pending the outcome of investigations.

“Cartrack must strengthen policies to ensure no employee is pressured, intimidated or victimised for reporting illness or seeking medical attention, strengthen employee wellness and mental health support programmes and establish regular engagement platforms with employees and worker representatives,” she said.

The marchers said they expect a formal meeting with ANCYL Greater Johannesburg Region representatives. The meeting will focus on updates regarding investigations, workplace reforms and employee welfare measures aimed at preventing similar incidents.

Cartrack chief executive officer Joshua Victor acknowledged receipt of the memorandum. He said the company would take responsibility for the family and funeral arrangements.

Dladla will be laid to rest this weekend.
