Thousands of worshippers, community members and dignitaries gathered at the United African Apostle Church in Vhufuli Village, Limpopo, yesterday to honour the legendary David Thidiela during the annual Thidiela Day celebration.

Held every year towards the end of July, the event celebrates the Thidiela family and their contribution to the community. This year’s gathering also marked David Thidiela’s 75th birthday ahead of his birthday on 29 July.

Church members were joined by traditional leaders, politicians, Chiefs, business people and delegates from across the country.

They came together to pay tribute to a man many described as a humble leader whose compassion, generosity and unwavering commitment to serving others have touched countless lives.

Speakers said his kindness has uplifted many people, not only in Limpopo but across South Africa.

David Thidiela, who leads the United African Apostle Church and founded Black Leopards Football Club, also used the occasion to honour his parents. Many reflected on the values they instilled in him and how those principles continue to guide his leadership and service.

The day’s programme began with a night vigil before worshippers visited the local chief, in keeping with tradition. They later returned to the church, where songs, prayers, praise and dance filled the service from early morning until lunchtime. The congregation also joined together to sing Happy Birthday in honour of David Thidiela.

Apostle Israel Dichane, who also served as master of ceremonies, said the annual event had become a cherished tradition for the village.

“The event takes place every year in honour of the Thidiela family and the role they have played in Vhufuli Village. The Chief of Vhufuli decided that the last weekend of July every year would be dedicated to celebrating the Thidiela family at their church. This year’s event was much bigger than last year’s one. It is a blessing to witness so many people coming to honour Thidiela,” he said.

Dichane, who has known David Thidiela for more than a decade, described him as a humble man whose influence extends far beyond the church.

“He is a humble man, a helper, a father, a mentor and a leader to everyone whose path he has crossed,” he said.

Throughout the celebration, speaker after speaker reflected on David Thidiela’s contribution to both the church and football.

Many spoke of his dedication to uplifting communities and supporting those in need. They said his leadership has inspired generations and left a lasting impact on countless families.

Among those paying tribute was his nephew, Mashonelo, who said David Thidiela had instilled discipline, respect and strong values in the family.

“He is a strict and disciplined man. He wants order and discipline, and that’s something we all love and learnt from him,” said Mashonelo with a smile.

As prayers, hymns and heartfelt tributes filled the church, the gathering became more than a birthday celebration. It was a dignified expression of gratitude for David Thidiela, whose legacy of faith, leadership and service continues to inspire people both within his community and across the country.
