World Cup fever is sweeping across the globe as anticipation grows for the 2026 FIFA World Cup 2026, with fans already counting down to the biggest edition of the tournament in history.
The competition will kick off on 11 June 2026, when hosts Mexico welcome South Africa’s Bafana Bafana at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The tournament will be jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada, featuring 48 teams, 104 matches and 16 host cities.
As excitement builds internationally, South African supporters are sharing mixed views on Bafana Bafana’s chances on football’s biggest stage.
Robert Mazibuko from Orlando, Soweto, said he is optimistic and believes the national team can rise to the occasion. “All I can say is we are counting on you,” he said.
Siyabonga Buthulezi from Protea Glen, Soweto, expressed confidence and hope, saying he is keeping faith in the team’s ability to secure a win. “They can do it, and I am hoping that they will,” he said.
Lwazi Ngcobo from Mamelodi said he is approaching the tournament with caution and realism. “I am being realistic. I will not hold my breath. I will believe it when I see it, if they win. But I still wish them luck,” Ngcobo said.
Thabo Mahao from Hammanskraal said he is not putting himself under pressure about the team’s performance, adding that expectations should be managed. “It will be a miracle if they win. I don’t know, but that’s just how I feel. But let me give them the benefit of the doubt,” he said.
The tournament, which will be the largest in FIFA World Cup history, is set to conclude on 19 July 2026, when a new world champion will be crowned after six weeks of global football action.
For South Africans, attention will now turn to Bafana Bafana as they prepare to compete on one of sport’s grandest stages, carrying the hopes and doubts of a nation as the countdown continues.
