A police corruption investigation has led to the arrest of two senior South African Police Service officers and a civilian in Gauteng on allegations of illegal dealings involving precious metals.
The arrests were carried out over the weekend following an intensive investigation by the Gauteng Counter-Intelligence Operations (GCI-OPS), who executed a J50 warrant as part of the operation.
Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed the suspects are facing allegations of unlawful dealing in precious metals, corruption, and related offences.
The trio are expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court tomorrow on charges including corruption, defeating the ends of justice and contraventions of sector legislation.
Mathe said the arrests form part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to dismantle criminal networks involved in the illicit precious minerals trade.
