Every Sunday afternoon, the smooth sounds of jazz flow through the airwaves of Thobela FM, guided by the warm and unmistakable voice of Promise Makgoale, better known as Mispro or The JazzLady. As host of Jazz Ye E Phelago from 1pm to 3pm, she has spent the past eight years becoming a trusted companion to jazz lovers across the country.

Following in the footsteps of late broadcaster Blaza Mphahlele and actress and presenter Rami Chuene, Mispro has built a broadcasting style rooted in warmth, storytelling and emotional connection.

“Radio is intimate. It reaches people in their most personal spaces,” Mispro told The News Desk. “Jazz speaks to the soul. It carries emotion, history and depth.”

Beyond presenting, Mispro is also a producer focused on education, empowerment and nurturing talent. At the centre of her work is Jazz Ye E Phelago, a programme she describes as deeply personal.

The show includes two standout features. The first, My Jazz Net Daar, gives musicians a platform through airplay while promoting South African jazz.

The second feature, Gasebahwelela (Gone but not forgotten), honours jazz legends whose contributions shaped the genre.

“From the days of Dorkay House, where musicians created under apartheid, to the freedom of expressing jazz openly today, we remember those voices,” she said.

Mispro works closely with music compilers Claycia Crawford and Kgabo Mokgonyana to shape the show’s soulful sound.

“Together, we curate with intention, ensuring every song contributes to a meaningful experience,” she said.

Her ability to blend storytelling with music has earned her loyal listeners, many of whom credit the show with helping them through grief, loneliness and difficult times.

Away from jazz, Mispro also produces educational programmes State Your Mind and Teen Zone, which focus on empowering tweens and teenagers.

“We encourage young people to express themselves confidently while maintaining respect and integrity,” she said.

Inspired by legendary broadcasters including Bob Mabena and Eddie Zondi, Mispro is also developing Mispro Beauty, a brand aimed at helping girls and women embrace their natural beauty and confidence.
