Member of Parliament and National Coloured Congress (NCC) leader Fadiel Adams (49) will remain in custody after appearing in the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court on charges of fraud and defeating the administration of justice.
The case has been postponed to 13 May for a formal bail application, with the State confirming it will oppose his release.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Adams faces three fraud charges and two counts of defeating the administration of justice. The allegations stem from incidents in November 2024 and January 2025, during which he is accused of visiting Westville Correctional Centre and interviewing two awaiting trial detainees linked to separate matters, including the Sindiso Magaqa murder investigation. The meetings were reportedly recorded.
Prosecutors allege that Adams misrepresented his authority to SAPS, eThekwini Metro Police and correctional officials, creating the impression he was on official parliamentary duty. This, the State says, led to him being provided with an official escort between King Shaka International Airport and the prison facility.
It is further alleged that he conducted engagements with inmates without approval from investigating officers, legal representatives or a parliamentary mandate.
NPA regional spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, said Adams is accused of falsely presenting his authority to law enforcement and correctional services and engaging with detainees without proper authorisation.
The court recorded the State’s opposition to bail, and Adams will remain in custody until his next appearance on 13 May.
In a separate matter, the Sindiso Magaqa murder case involving Sbonelo Myeza, Mbulelo Mpofana and Zweli Phansi Stanley Skhosana returns to the Pietermaritzburg High Court on 18 May for trial.
Two accused are on bail, while Skhosana remains detained after a failed bail bid.
