The country has been left in mourning following the death of soccer star Jayden Adams.

The Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder died at the age of 25, leaving the football community and supporters devastated.

Tributes have poured in from across the country for one of the country’s brightest young talents.

The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) described Adams’ death as an “immeasurable loss” to his family, teammates, clubs and the nation.

“Jayden had only recently represented South Africa, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage and distinction,” SAFPU said.

The union extended its condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, Bafana Bafana and everyone whose life was touched by the midfielder.

“South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer,” SAFPU added.

The Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) also joined the nation in mourning Adams.

The party described him as an outstanding Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder and honoured his contribution to South African football.

Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie described Adams as one of the country’s brightest football talents.

“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams,” McKenzie said.

“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international.”

McKenzie said Adams would be remembered for his humility and professionalism.

“The fact that he chose to wear the national jersey and give his all for his country at that moment speaks to a depth of character and professionalism well beyond his years,” he said.

McKenzie also appealed to the public and the media to respect the privacy of Adams’ family and Mamelodi Sundowns.

“The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed, and I wish to appeal to members of the media and the public to exercise restraint and compassion, and to refrain from speculation,” McKenzie said.

Adams began his professional career at Stellenbosch FC after progressing through the club’s academy.

He became the academy’s first graduate to sign a professional contract and made 139 appearances before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025.

He represented Bafana Bafana at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, helping the national team secure a bronze medal. He later featured in the country’s historic 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

Adams had also endured personal heartbreak just weeks earlier. In June, his grandmother, Marianna Adams, died shortly before Bafana Bafana’s FIFA World Cup match against Czechia.

Despite his grief, Adams took to the field and helped the country earn a 1-1 draw before the national team went on to make history by reaching the knockout stages of the tournament for the first time.
