Former MK Party MP and musician Papa Penny has joined Floyd Shivambu’s Afrika Mayibuye Movement, marking a significant political development ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
Papa Penny, whose real name is Eric Kulani Giyani Nkovani, recently resigned from both Parliament and the MK Party following reported internal tensions within the party’s Limpopo leadership structures. His departure came amid growing disputes and dissatisfaction within provincial ranks, according to party insiders.
Papa Penny is widely known for his career in music and television, but he has also been involved in local political structures in the Greater Giyani area over a number of years. His political profile has combined public entertainment visibility with grassroots community engagement.
Shivambu confirmed Papa Penny’s inclusion during a media briefing in Johannesburg, where he formally welcomed him into the movement.
“We welcome Papa Penny Penny to the Afrika Mayibuye Movement,” said Shivambu. “He will lead our campaign in the Greater Giyani Municipality, strengthening our work on the ground as we connect with communities and grow support across the region. The movement believes Greater Giyani is ready for change, and we are committed to working hard to secure a victory for Mayibuye in the municipality.”
He added: “We are built on Ubuntu, guided by honesty, driven by collective prosperity, and united in the fight against corruption. We stand for a progressive Africa where the people come first and the continent rises together.”
