Advocate Samkelo Callaway Ntwana has been appointed Acting Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for the Eastern Cape Division by Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mmamoloko Kubayi.

The appointment is made in terms of section 13(3) of the National Prosecuting Authority Act of 1998 and takes effect from 1 May 2026. It will remain in place until the position is permanently filled.

The decision follows the upcoming retirement of current Eastern Cape DPP Barry Madolo, who will step down at the end of April 2026 upon reaching the compulsory retirement age.

Ntwana currently serves as Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions in the Eastern Cape Division and will assume the acting role to ensure continuity, stability and effective leadership during the transitional period.

The Ministry confirmed that the process to appoint a permanent Director of Public Prosecutions is underway.

Minister Kubayi has expressed appreciation to Madolo for his service to the National Prosecuting Authority and the justice system, and wished Ntwana well in his acting role.
