Somizi refusing to shake Ngizwe Mchunu’s hand has sparked debate online. Pic AIG
So Somizi refused to shake Ngizwe Mchunu’s hand… but honestly, Was He Wrong?
So let’s talk about it.
Last night at the Metro FM Music Awards, Ngizwe, a former radio personality and controversial figure, made his way to the VIP entrance and even attempted to greet Somizi Mhlongo with a handshake.
Somizi refused to shake hands with Ngizwe.
But was he wrong?
Short answer. No.
Long answer. Still no.
Because if we’re being real for a second, Somizi didn’t just wake up and randomly decide, “today I’m skipping handshakes.”
Somizi is one of the most friendly celebrities I have met in the industry.
Just a reminder to Ngizwe: Mzansi hasn’t forgotten how you repeatedly made homophobic remarks and launched public attacks directed at Somizi and the LGBTQ+ community.
Yes, Ngizwe you publicly insulted gay people, opposed LGBTQ+ visibility in cultural spaces, and made statements that were widely condemned.
And despite facing complaints and pressure from human rights bodies, you were instructed to retract or apologise, but you refused.
So this is not “just a random handshake moment.” There’s history behind it.
And to those wondering why Somizi didn’t greet him…
Well, now you know.
Respect is a two-way street. Always has been.
As for Somizi instructing security to block Ngizwe from entering the VIP tent, well… he had every right. I would have done the same if I were him.
But after Ngizwe was stopped at the entrance by security, instead of just walking away, he got angry and dished out insults at the security guard… honestly, at this point, I just have no further words for him.
The fact is, if any of us were in Somizi’s shoes and someone had publicly insulted us before, there is no way we would smile, shake hands, and act like everything is fine. Never shame.
So, Somizi not shaking hands is called setting boundaries.
And honestly, I respect Somizi for standing his ground.
