All schools across the Western Cape remained closed on today as worsening weather conditions continued to affect several parts of the province.
The Western Cape Education Department confirmed the province-wide closure, saying the decision followed consultations with the South African Weather Service and the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, with learner and staff safety cited as the main priority.
The shutdown applies to all public ordinary schools as well as special needs institutions across the province.
In a statement issued on Monday, the department said the decision was taken following updated forecasts and ongoing monitoring of the severe weather system.
“In the interests of learner and teacher safety, and following extensive engagement with the Provincial Disaster Management Centre and SAWS, it has been decided that all schools in the Western Cape will be closed today, 12 May,” the department said.
Officials stressed that school closures are not taken lightly, adding that the province’s default position is to keep schools operational wherever possible.
“Our default position is always to keep schools open, but we are mindful of the seriousness of the warnings currently in place,” the department added.
By 13:30 on Monday, the department said 227 schools had already submitted requests for independent closures due to localised weather conditions. Pre-emptive closures were also approved in parts of the Cape Winelands, Eden and Central Karoo districts, where the impact of the storm system has been more severe.
The department further confirmed that several schools had sustained storm-related damage, with assessments currently underway to determine the extent of repairs needed before schools can safely reopen.
Despite the disruption, officials said schools are expected to reopen on Wednesday, 13 May 2026, provided weather conditions improve.
“We will continue to monitor and assess developments closely to ensure that schools can reopen as soon as it is safe to do so, which is currently anticipated for Wednesday,” the department said.
Emergency services, disaster management teams, school staff, principals and parents were thanked for their cooperation during the severe weather emergency.
First responders assisting affected communities across the province were also acknowledged for their ongoing efforts as authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
