Roc Nation Sports International president Michael Yormark has praised Dr Irvin Khoza and the Premier Soccer League (PSL) executive for building the competition’s commercial standing.

Yormark made the remarks at a media roundtable in Cape Town on Tuesday, during a discussion about African players pursuing careers abroad.

“South Africa is slightly different, because the PSL is a very commercially strong league, and you have to give credit to Irvin Khoza and the whole executive for building that league over a long period of time,” he said.

Yormark said Roc Nation Sports International wants its players to reach the highest level possible in European football. He pointed to Belgium, Austria and Scandinavia as possible routes for players seeking to progress to bigger leagues.

He said South African players may have a different path from some West African footballers, who move more directly to clubs in Europe or Major League Soccer in the United States.

For South Africans, a move to one of the country’s leading clubs could form part of that journey. Yormark noted that these teams have established histories, strong identities and large supporter bases.

He said the aim was to help South African players reach the highest level, while recognising that their route abroad may differ from that of players elsewhere on the continent.
