Miguel Cardoso has confirmed that he will remain in charge of Mamelodi Sundowns after agreeing to a new long-term contract with the club.
The Portuguese coach revealed the development during an interview with former Sundowns player Teko Modise on Masandawana TV.
Cardoso said the new agreement was settled during the European summer, before the start of the current campaign.
“The technical staff is very happy to be in the club; the club is showing happiness in having us, so we changed the terms we had,” Cardoso said.
He explained that Sundowns initially exercised an option in his previous contract, but the two sides then began discussions about a new agreement.
“The club at the time had an option they executed, but we at the same time on the same day started discussing a new contract,” he said.
Cardoso confirmed that the new agreement is long-term but did not disclose its exact duration.
“And yes, we have a long-term contract that we as coaches want to take to the limit,” he said.
For Cardoso, the decision to continue at Sundowns is closely linked to the relationship he has developed with the club.
“The commitment is very strong from both sides,” he said.
“It’s just a sign that we share values and that makes everyone happy and gives stability. We’re happy.”
The coach joined Sundowns in December 2024 and has since guided the club to major success.
His biggest achievement came last season when he led the Brazilians to the CAF Champions League title, ending a decade-long wait for the club’s second continental crown.
Sundowns have also started the new campaign with another international trophy after winning the African-Asian-Pacific Cup.
Cardoso said the contract itself was not the most important part of the agreement.
“The paper is not important. The commitment is important,” he said.
The coach will now continue preparing Sundowns for Saturday’s MTN8 final against Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The match will allow Cardoso to add another domestic trophy to his growing collection since taking charge of the Brazilians.
For now, the coach’s future at Chloorkop is settled, with both sides having committed to continuing their relationship beyond the initial agreement.
