South African singer Judith Mudau is gaining international recognition for promoting South Africa’s culture and identity in China, earning recognition as a Global South African Ambassador.
Based in Shanghai, Mudau has become known not only as a performer but also as a cultural ambassador, using music and public engagements to strengthen ties between South Africa and China.
“I have never been shy to let people know that I am South African. It is the first thing I say when introducing myself and my band,” she told The News Desk.
Mudau said she has consistently supported fellow South Africans abroad and worked closely with the South African Consulate-General and Brand South Africa on various initiatives.
“Our Consul-General in Shanghai, Phuti Tsipa, and Brand South Africa recognised my efforts and gave me opportunities to use my talent for the benefit of our country,” she said.
She has participated in several national and international events, including Mandela Day activities and Shanghai Fashion Week, often at her own expense.
According to Tshepiso Malele, the recognition forms part of Brand South Africa’s Global South Africans programme, which mobilises South Africans living abroad to positively position the country internationally.
“Through the programme, we enlist the talent, experience and influence of South Africans abroad as invaluable assets in promoting the country globally,” Malele said.
Mudau has also helped fellow South Africans secure work opportunities in Shanghai while continuing to champion South African culture.
Born 41 years ago in Kutuma village, Mudau believes cultural diplomacy plays a key role in strengthening international relations.
“Music creates a space for people to learn about each other and discover how much we share culturally,” she said.
The gospel jazz singer, who previously performed with the group led by legendary producer Sello Chicco Twala, said she wants the world to recognise South Africans as talented and globally competitive.
Mudau’s China-based manager, Elva Sun, described her as an exceptional performer with remarkable stage presence.
“She delivers powerful and unforgettable performances that continue to win admiration from audiences everywhere,” said Sun.
