The United States has reportedly suspended its brief naval operation escorting commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, just one day after it was launched.
US President Donald Trump said the decision to pause the mission was linked to what he described as encouraging progress toward a possible diplomatic agreement with Iran. He indicated that Washington still intends to maintain pressure on Tehran, including restrictions affecting Iranian maritime activity, but suggested the immediate escort operation was no longer necessary for now.
The escort mission had been introduced amid rising tensions in one of the world’s most sensitive shipping routes, through which a significant portion of global oil exports passes. Any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz typically raises alarm in international energy markets due to its strategic importance.
While details of the reported diplomatic developments remain limited, the pause may point to a possible shift toward negotiations, even as broader geopolitical tensions between Washington and Tehran continue.
Iranian officials have not yet publicly responded to the reported US decision.
The situation in the region remains fluid, with observers closely monitoring for confirmation of talks or further changes in maritime security operations.
