Five people have died following a crash involving an Amazon cargo aircraft at Miami International Airport.

The Boeing 767-300 was operated by 21 Air on behalf of Amazon. It was arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it ran beyond the runway, struck several vehicles and caught fire.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the crash in a statement, saying Flight 7598 overran the runway after landing at about 2 pm local time on Sunday. The agency said it would investigate the incident.

Five other people were injured, with three reported to be in critical condition. Emergency crews responded to the crash and rescued people from the aircraft and vehicles hit in the incident.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating what caused the aircraft to leave the runway. No cause has been established.

Amazon also confirmed the crash in a statement and said the aircraft was operated by 21 Air.

The company confirmed that five people had died and said it was “heartbroken” by the loss of life. Amazon extended its condolences to the families, loved ones and others affected by the crash and said it would co-operate with authorities investigating the incident.

The crash temporarily disrupted operations at Miami International Airport, with flights delayed and cancelled as emergency crews dealt with the scene.

The identities of those who died have not yet been released.
