Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan is mourning the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, who died today in Zanzibar.
Hafidh died at about 8 am while receiving treatment for a heart condition at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital, according to Tanzania’s Vice-President, Deogratius Ndejembi, who announced his death.
Funeral arrangements are under way in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.
Hafidh became Tanzania’s First Gentleman after his wife assumed the presidency in 2021. The couple married in 1978 and had four children.
Messages of condolence have begun pouring in following his death.
Kenyan President William Ruto said he received the news with “deep sorrow” and extended condolences to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania.
Ruto said Samia had lost a lifelong companion, while her children had lost a beloved father. He described Hafidh as a distinguished son of Tanzania and said Kenya stood with its neighbour during the period of mourning.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has also sent his condolences to President Samia and her family.
Kagame said Rwanda stood in solidarity with President Samia and the Tanzanian people as they mourned Hafidh and reflected on his life and legacy.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) also extended its condolences to the Tanzanian president, her family and the people of Tanzania.
“Africa CDC stands with President Samia and the people of Tanzania during this time of sorrow,” the organisation said, wishing Hafidh eternal peace.
The African Union Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, also expressed his condolences to President Samia and her family.
In a statement issued today, Youssouf said: “I extend my profound sympathy to H.E. President Samia and her family during this difficult period and wish them strength, courage and solace.”
He added: “I pray for the peaceful repose of the departed soul. Inalilahi wainailehi rajiun.”
The messages from regional leaders and institutions come as Tanzania begins a period of mourning for the First Gentleman.
