Former Botswana President Festus Mogae has been laid to rest following a State Funeral held at the University of Botswana in Gaborone, where regional leaders, former heads of state and diplomatic representatives gathered to pay tribute to his life and legacy.

The ceremony formed part of Botswana’s official programme honouring Mogae, who served as President from 1998 to 2008 and is widely credited with strengthening democratic institutions, promoting economic stability and advancing key public policy reforms during his tenure.

South Africa was represented by Deputy President Paul Mashatile and Mrs Humile Mashatile, who attended on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The gathering drew a strong regional presence, including former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe and former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, alongside ambassadors and senior representatives of governments from across Africa.

Botswana President Duma Boko led the official tributes, describing Mogae as a principled and disciplined leader whose presidency strengthened Botswana’s governance systems and international standing.

He highlighted Mogae’s contribution to economic management and public health reform, noting his role in guiding the country through major national challenges.

The State Funeral concluded with full military honours before the cortege proceeded to Phomolong Cemetery, where Mogae was interred during a private burial attended by close family members.

Mogae is remembered as a respected African statesman whose leadership helped shape Botswana’s modern political and institutional identity
